Hand drill, fire plough and fire piston

The three friction methods after the bow drill. Two are harder than the bow drill and one is easier than all of them, and knowing which is which saves a great deal of wasted effort.

The bow drill is the friction method to learn first, because the bow does the work your hands cannot sustain. These three are the alternatives, and they are not equally worth your time.

Which of these is worth your time

Read that table honestly before investing weeks in a skill.

The hand drill and fire plough are harder than the bow drill, not easier. They are worth knowing because they need no cordage at all, which is their single genuine advantage. In the British climate, with damp air and damp wood, both are difficult even for practised people.

The fire piston is the outlier. It is not a primitive skill you build up, it is a small precision-made object you either have or do not. Once you have one it is the most reliable non-flame ignition method available: it works wet, works cold, needs no cordage, no strength and no technique to speak of, and it will work thousands of times. If you are choosing where to put effort, buying a fire piston beats mastering a hand drill by a wide margin.

The hand drill

The oldest method there is. A spindle spun directly between your palms into a hearth board.

The technique:

  1. Kneel on the hearth board or hold it with a foot.
  2. Place the spindle in the socket, held vertically between flat palms near the top.
  3. Roll your palms forward and down together, pressing down as you go. The spindle spins and your hands travel down it.
  4. When your hands reach the bottom, snap them back to the top without letting the spindle stop or lift, and go again.
  5. Build speed and pressure until the dust in the notch is black and smoking, then commit hard for the last twenty seconds.

Why it is hard: you are supplying downward pressure and rotation with the same movement, and the two are in conflict. Press harder and your hands run out of travel sooner. Go faster and you press less. There is no bow to separate the two forces, which is exactly what the bow drill was invented to fix.

The techniques that make it possible:

Expect blisters. This method is hard on the hands, and torn palms are common in the learning stage. Build up slowly rather than in one long attempt.

The fire plough

A hardwood stick ploughed hard along a groove in a softer baseboard, pushing dust ahead of it that eventually ignites.

The set: a baseboard of soft dry wood with a straight groove about 200 mm long cut into it, and a plough stick of harder wood with a chisel-shaped end.

The technique: hold the board at an angle, brace it, and drive the plough stick up and down the groove with real force and speed, keeping to exactly the same track. Dust accumulates at the far end of the groove, and with enough heat that pile ignites.

The honest assessment: it is exhausting, it demands a great deal of force sustained for a long time, and it is very sensitive to wood choice and dryness. It is the traditional Polynesian method and it works well with the woods and climate it evolved with. In Britain, with British woods and British humidity, it is the least reliable method on this page.

It is worth knowing exists, worth trying once to understand the principle, and not worth choosing as your fallback.

The fire piston

Sudden compression of air heats it. Compress air fast enough in a sealed tube and the temperature at the bottom of the stroke exceeds 260°C, which is enough to ignite tinder. This is a diesel engine, scaled down and hand-powered.

What it is: a closely-fitted piston in a sealed cylinder, with a small recess in the piston face to hold tinder, and an O-ring or greased gasket to seal.

Using it:

  1. Put a small piece of tinder in the recess in the piston face. Char cloth is ideal, see char cloth and firelighters. True tinder fungus and some very fine punk wood also work.
  2. Insert the piston into the cylinder.
  3. Strike the end sharply with the palm of your hand. One fast, hard, committed blow. Speed is everything: a slow push lets the heat escape through the walls and does nothing at all.
  4. Withdraw immediately. Do not linger, or the ember suffocates.
  5. Tip the glowing ember into a tinder bundle and blow it to flame.

Why it is so good in Britain:

Its weaknesses: the seal is the whole device. An O-ring perishes, and lubrication dries out. Keep a spare O-ring and a smear of grease with it, and check the seal occasionally by putting a finger over the end and feeling whether it holds pressure.

Making one from scratch requires precision machining well beyond a household workshop, so this is a bought item. It is not expensive, and for reliable ignition without a flame it is the best thing in this domain.

What all friction methods share

Whichever you use, the same three things decide success, and none of them are technique.

1. Dryness beats everything. Water in the wood boils at 100°C and the steam carries away the heat you are trying to accumulate, so the dust never reaches ignition. This is the single commonest reason a set "does not work". Keep your set indoors, in a coat, or in a sleeping bag. In Britain this matters more than anywhere the technique was invented.

2. The notch is not optional. It admits air and collects the dust into one pile. Without it you will produce a great deal of smoke and never an ember.

3. Everything must be ready before you start. Tinder bundle made, kindling graded and laid, fire site prepared. An ember lives a minute or two, and gathering kindling while holding one is how people lose a fire they worked half an hour for.
