Light a fire top-down

Build it upside down and light the top. Cuts particulate emissions by 50 to 80%, lights first time, needs no poking, and burns for hours unattended. The single easiest improvement anyone can make to how they burn wood.

Almost everyone builds a fire the same way: paper at the bottom, kindling on the paper, logs on top, light the paper. It is how we were all taught and it is the worse method by a wide margin.

Turn it over. Big logs at the bottom, kindling on top, light the top. The fire burns slowly downward into its own fuel.

This is not a marginal preference. It cuts particulate emissions by 50 to 80%, lights first time far more reliably, needs no poking or feeding for hours, and produces almost no smoke.

Why upside down works

Three things happen differently, and they compound.

The flue heats immediately. A cold flue is the reason a conventional fire smokes back into the room for the first ten minutes: there is no draught until something warms the chimney, and the smoke has nowhere to go. Lighting at the top puts the flame at the highest point of the fire, closest to the flue, so hot gas goes up the chimney within seconds and the draw establishes before the main fuel is involved at all.

The smoke has to pass through the flame. This is the important one. Wood does not really burn; it decomposes into flammable gas which then burns. In a bottom-up fire, the logs sitting on top of the flame release that gas above the fire, where there is nothing to ignite it, so it goes up the chimney as smoke. Smoke is unburned fuel.

In a top-down fire, the burning zone is above the fuel. Gas released by the logs below rises directly into the flame and is burned there. That is where the emissions reduction comes from and why the fire looks so clean.

It cannot collapse. A conventional fire is a pile that falls in on itself as the bottom burns away, smothering the flame and needing constant attention. A top-down fire burns from the top of a stable stack downward, and the structure never moves.

Building it

  1. Bottom layer: the big logs. Two or three, laid flat and close together, side by side across the firebox. Not crossed, not stacked loosely, just laid down filling the base.
  2. Second layer at right angles, medium pieces, a small gap between each.
  3. Third layer at right angles again, thumb-thick splits.
  4. Fourth layer at right angles, pencil-thick kindling, maybe eight or ten pieces.
  5. Firelighter on top, in the middle. A commercial one, or a homemade wax-and-sawdust one, or a tight twist of paper with birch bark.

The crossing is what gives the stack its air gaps and its stability. Each layer sits on the one below with space between the pieces for air to move up through.

Leave the top of the firebox clear. The flame needs room above the stack. Filling the box to the roof chokes it.

Lighting and leaving it

  1. Open the air controls fully, both primary and secondary if the stove has both.
  2. Light the firelighter on top. One match.
  3. Close the stove door but leave it slightly ajar for the first minute or two if your stove is prone to a slow start, then close it fully. Some stoves have a lighting position for this.
  4. Leave it alone.

That last instruction is the hard one. The fire will look feeble for several minutes, burning only the small stuff on top, and every instinct says to open the door and poke it. Do not. It is heating the flue and establishing the draught, and it will take hold.

  1. After 15 to 20 minutes, once the fire is properly established and the flue is hot, reduce the air to your normal setting.
  2. Do not damp it right down. A strangled fire smoulders, which is how creosote forms. See sweeping a flue.

A well-built top-down stack in a decent stove runs 4 to 6 hours with no intervention at all. No feeding, no poking, no getting up. In a cold house at night that is worth a great deal, though note that nobody should be asleep in a room with a fire still burning: see the warning on carbon monoxide and ventilation.

In an open fireplace and outdoors

Open fireplaces: the method works and matters more, because an open fire has no door to control the burn and no way to fix a smoky start. The immediate flue heating is precisely what stops a room filling with smoke on lighting.

Outdoors: it works, with one adjustment. There is no flue, so you lose the draught benefit, but you keep the clean burn and the stability. It is excellent for a fire you want to light and then leave: a cooking fire that needs to be ready in half an hour, or an evening fire.

In wind, build the stack with the smallest material on the downwind side of the top so the flame is driven into the fuel rather than away from it.

Where it is not the right choice: if you need heat immediately, a small conventional fire lit at the bottom gives you flame faster. Top-down is for a long, clean, unattended burn.

Why the old way is worse

Worth spelling out, because most people have thirty years of habit to overcome.

The bottom-up habit exists because it is how you light a campfire from nothing with only tinder, where you genuinely do start small at the bottom and add upward. That is the right method for building a fire from scratch as you go. It is the wrong method for laying a fire you intend to light all at once.

One consequence worth noticing: because a top-down fire burns clean and needs no attention, it is much easier to run a stove properly hot rather than damping it down and walking away. Most of the harm from domestic wood burning, to the flue and to the air, comes from smouldering. This method makes the better behaviour also the easier one.
